On October 15, 1908 the Council of Safety Chapter was organized with twelve charter members. Mrs. Josie Putman Simmons was the Organizing Regent. The name "Council of Safety" seemed most fitting, as a number of the ancestors of the charter members had served on the Council of Safety in Savannah prior to the Revolution. In 1899 the National Society Colonial Dames of America placed a bronze tablet on the building which marks the site of "Tondee's Tavern". Here the Council of Safety held weekly meetings on Monday morning, and here on July 4, 1775 assembled the Provincial Congress which formally severed the tie of allegiance between the Colony and the Crown. Hence, our Chapter has a very real interest for the name "Council of Safety"!
